A Message to Our NBN Community: On the Word “Lifestyle”

We’d like to take a moment to speak on the word “lifestyle,” and the importance of context.
As Ethical Naturists, we know how quickly words can be misunderstood or misused—especially in a culture that often resists nuance. But when we build intentional systems rooted in values like consent, clarity, and respect, we create space where words don’t have to feel dangerous.
During a recent conversation in our community, we reflected on the power of staying in the grey area—avoiding rigid, all-or-nothing thinking. It reminded us that unconscious bias is often what does the most harm, not the words themselves.
The word lifestyle simply means a way of living. In our work, it reflects a commitment to freedom, body respect, non-sexual social nudity, and our mission to foster more diverse, equitable, and inclusive spaces within naturism. We are proudly reclaiming this word—because to assume it only means swinging or sexual expression is to limit what naturism truly is and can become.
So let’s stay open.
Let’s continue thinking critically.
And let’s lead with care—not just for ourselves, but for the community we’re building together.
With gratitude,
Naturist Business Network (NBN)
